In Adam’s supposed attempt to ruin mom shaming, he was in truth aimed at ruining breastfeeding.

Why not Adam Ruins Everything: Formula Marketing, or Adam Ruins Everything: Mommy Wars?

The episode Adam Ruins Everything: Why Formula Isn’t Poison (which originally aired on July 9th but you can watch it here) plays much like a formula advertisement. It reminded me of the infamous Similac one that aimed to dupe us into receiving it as some cute public service announcement when really, illusions dissolved, it was just a smartly manipulative attempt to sell formula.

A few questions raised by this episode: is it really necessary to degrade breastfeeding in order to prove formula isn’t poison? It’s true that formula isn’t poison, but can’t this fact stand on its own merit without comparing against breast milk?

Overall, Adam’s episode focuses less about how formula isn’t poison and more about how breastfeeding really isn’t all that great, apparently. The information here is incomplete at best, biased and inaccurate at worst.

About That Similac Commercial Everyone’s Sharing…

Have you seen the new Similac commercial cleverly called “The Mother ‘Hood”? It shows what life is supposedly like for new parents, a humorous take on those big, bad “Mommy Wars” firing off on “support” forums, in the media, even at the local playground. (Scroll down for the full video).

We’ve all been judged. We’ve all been judge-y. Thus all of us will probably laugh (then cry) watching this commercial. It starts out kind of hilarious and things suddenly plummet to the worst-case scenario at the climax. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but trust me, if you have a child you will cry. List of Various Formula Recalls

This is in no way a complete list. Why? Because the FDA doesn’t keep a permanent record of recalls, so they often disappear without trace after a short period of time. Still, from this brief list (if you consider it brief, comparatively at least), you’ll notice a pattern: it’s the same companies that have recalls….over and over and over and over again.

This is not a formula-bashing post. These are the facts, however, and anyone who’s responsible for feeding infants may find it useful to be aware of this. If you use formula, you might consider spending your money on a company that generates product for a smaller part of the market (Nestle, Mead Johnson, and Abbott are the major companies that account for a whopping 90% of U.S. formulas).
