I was recently invited to join a dialogue with Lynda Harlos of the talk show Parent With Purpose.
From the video description:
“Deciding to Circumcise or not doesn’t make you a good or bad parent! Be informed and make your decision wisely. Click on this link to take you to the website to get all of the links regarding their website, and all their resources. […] Parent your own way #ParentWithPurpose […] We can help each other instead of judging each other.”
You can watch Part 1 here with Brittany Gillespie Cromar of Intact Utah.
After viewing that segment, click here for Part 2 in which I speak briefly on behalf of Intact Texas/Intact Houston about different topics that are frequently brought up in regard to infant male circumcision. You can also watch it directly on the website if you would like to take advantage of the plethora of attached resources.
Let me know your thoughts! What do you think is the most important message or knowledge about which to spread awareness, when it comes to routine infant circumcision?
I understand where you’re coming from- but genital cutting- of boys or girls- is unethical. Routine infant circumcision is not medically based or ethical. All the ‘benefits’ (UTIs/HIV/cancer/infections) are small or non-existent. Girls get UTIs 8x rate of intact or circumcised boys and we don’t operate on them at birth.
Strapping a newborn down with little to no pain medication isn’t ok. Neither is the pain afterwards or the amputation of healthy tissue.
There are psychological impacts of circumcision. It can severely hamper sexual function- many men don’t share this with their parents or tie it to their circumcision so these issues are underreported. How can we say any genital cutting if girls-medical or cultural- is unethical and a human rights violation, but cutting boys is ok?
I highly suggest this piece by ‘Evidence Based Birth’

I completely agree with all of your points. I’m pro intact and believe this is at its core, a practice that breaches basic ethics. Did you watch the interview? We discussed how the medical “reasons” to circumcise are myths.
P.S. – I love that article by EBB. It’s one I often send to my students/clients!
